MAY 23 / JUL 21 / AUG 26: CURRENT EVERCLEAR NEWS

If you haven't been following the day to day affairs in the Everclear world, here's a quick rundown of what's been going on.

Craig and Greg have officially departed the band. Both, however, have given their full blessing to Art continuing to perform and record as Everclear.

Craig has formed a new band with Scotty Heard (formerly of Sweaty Nipples) and one-time Everclear touring percussionist Brian Lehfeldt (also formerly of Sweaty Nipples). After months of debates, the band has finally settled on the name Tri-Polar, and have a website at TripolarMusic.com.

Greg has formed a new band with his brother Mark and the mysterious Ollie Tamale called The Oohlas. They have a couple of songs (and a six song demo CD) available on their website.

Art has recruited drummer Eric Bretl (since replaced by Brett Snyder), guitarist Dave French, and bassist Sam Hudson as the new touring line-up for Everclear. They made their live debut in Long Beach in early April, and will play Harborfest in Racine, Wisconsin, on June 19th. They recently added keyboard player Josh Crawley to the band.

Following the recent controversy concerning their morning DJ, Portland radio station KNRK temporarily pulled all of their air staff, including Art's Blackjack Radio program. It is unclear if/when the show will return.

At the moment, there are no concrete plans for new Everclear material. But an Everclear Greatest Hits is tentatively scheduled for an early fall release.

MAY 22: SONG OF THE MOMENT OFFLINE

Yes, as you probably noticed months ago, the songs in the Song of the Moment section are offline. (They were actually taken down in February - apologies for the lack of formal explanation.)

Here's what happened.

In January, WhiteLightning.org consumed about 32 gigabytes of bandwidth. Considering that the site's limit is about ten gigabytes per month, and the entire site only contains 140 megabytes of files, this was rather alarming.

We investigated what was going on, and discovered that several people were using programs like Windows Media Player to stream MP3 files off of the website. Essentially, each play downloaded the song off the website, and some people were playing songs over and over and over again.

One particular individual actually consumed a full gigabyte of bandwidth by him/herself. Keep in mind that if you downloaded the entire website at one time, it would only take 140 megabytes of bandwidth. Essentially, they did the equivalent of downloading the entire website seven times.

This is unacceptable. Fortunately, our webhost was very forgiving and didn't send us a giant bill at the end of the month. But what happened required us to take down all of the files until we could figure out a way to force people to download instead of streaming.

On a general note, you should NEVER stream MP3 files off of a website with Windows Media Player (or WinAmp, etc.) unless the website explicitly encourages streaming. It's understandable that some people like not having to keep MP3's on their computer, but it's unfair for the owner of the site you're visiting for you to download the song again and again. Bandwidth costs money, and the worst offenders take money right out of the site owner's pocket. You should always download the song ONCE, then do repeat plays off of your computer.

Anyway, enough preaching. We're hoping to figure out some way to bring the files back, but it may not happen in the near future. Fortunately, most of what we've made available over the years is available on file sharing services.

MAR 2: ART ON LOVELINE

Art will appear on the syndicated radio show Loveline on Wednesday, March 3rd. The show airs live beginning at 10pm PT (1am ET). On most stations in the middle and eastern part of the country, Loveline is tape-delayed, so Art's appearance may not run in your area until Thursday.

If you want to hear it Wednesday night, tune in to 91X's Webcast (Windows Media Player). If 1am ET is too late for you, try 96 Rock's webcast (Windows Media Player) on Thursday night at 11pm ET for the rebroadcast.
